Reflection on class 1/2/2021
During our class we watched a few videos showing the community of Carrigtwohill, the videos showed how the small town has had a big increase in it's population in the last few decades. What was shown showed the viewer that this town that was once mostly populated by people of irish descent is now growing into a diverse and open community.
Many people from all over the world as shown in the video there were people of all sorts of ethnicities. What's great about what we all discussed is that we all agreed on how this change in the community was making the town a more friendly place to people, while perhaps the older generations might have a bit of a hesitance to invite people into their community most people wouldn't be hateful or dismissive but more so maybe wanting to keep their distance as most of the people they've known their entire lives are all from the same background as they are.
Meeting people of different backgrounds can be a challenge to some, a lot of people might have their reservations or "fears" but when they take the time to get to know the new people surrounding them they realize that their expanding community is a good thing.
This isn't really a problem with the younger generation however as people nowadays are a lot more open to meeting new people on a daily basis , perhaps a silver lining of social media nowadays is that we get to experience all sorts of cultures from our own homes which lets us strike up a conversation more easily with someone from a foreign background as it makes us feel more familiar with them already.
Some of the things i'd definitely be curious about personally is:
How do people who move here from foreign countries or areas feel when they move to a smaller community like Carrigtwohill?
Have they ever had to deal with issues of feeling different or like they don't belong?
If they have any children have they noticed a more lenient and inviting atmosphere from the younger generation towards their background?
How would they like to see their community grow, would there be any specific areas built where their community can get together and interact with each other more easily?
