Topics and Questions for Our Workshop Participants

Based on a group brainstorming session we had in Google Docs, I have compiled the following questions for use in our workshop/podcast sessions with our participants: Basic Questions for Older and Younger Generations:  Name Their generation i.e. eighties, nineties, noughties Occupation Do you take part in any societies, committees or clubs in Carrigtwohill?  If Carrigtwohill was a person, how would you describe them?  Diversity Related Questions:  Carrigtwohill's population has become increasingly diverse in the past few decades. In your opinion what kind of changes has this diversity brought to Carrigtwohill?  How do you feel about these changes?  Do you think newcomers to Carrigtwohill feel welcomed by other members of the community?  Is there anything your community do/could do to welcome newer members of the community? Generational Questions: OLDER In three words, how would you describe your generation? Carrigtwohill offers a lot of amenities...

Week 4 Class reflection

During our last class we were put into our groups to discuss the nature of our project, what we will be centering our idea around and how we could make a difference in the community with our project.  We ultimately decided on a podcast that discusses the differences between the older and the younger generation in the community of Carrigtwohill. We all assessed which one of us would be handling certain parts of the project. We later on gained feedback towards our project and gained a bit more insight on what we should be doing and what direction to take our project towards.

Reflection on guest speaker: Aidan

Reflection on guest speaker: Aida In the talk with Aida she expressed a variety of experiences she's had since she'd moved to Carrigtwohill. She  talked a lot about how shes had a generally good experience here and while shes experienced a bit of alienation she knows people arent really here are generally welcoming towards her if the general population isn't just a bit cold towards strangers in general especially the younger generation towards each other. Shes noted that  she'shappy to be able to raise her son here and isnt very afraid of letting him out and doesn't really fear he wont come home or get himself in trouble, she said she’d love to start a podcast for people who are migrants like herself and from all walks of life. Her big problem here when she was still here seeking asylum was that the government's support wasn't quite as receptive and helpful as it should've been bad support for people like herself.               She had s...

Reflection on our last class - Cillian

during our last class we as a team were placed into a breakout room at several points during the lesson to discuss certain topics to do with our project. We discussed the theme and certain roles we could do for it, and what type of media we will be expressing our final product on. Naturally this gave us a lot to think about, but we quickly came to a group decision on a theme based on our finding with the speakers that came in. after that we discussed our individual roles in the group, in which we'll all work on but one of us will take charge and lead that aspect of the project. once we rejoined the min room Aidan presented our goals and plan for the project to the rest of the class, and we gained feedback based on this. by the end of the class we gained a solid plan of action with our project.

My Main Role In The Team - Cillian

Due to the fact that I Live in Carrigtwohill, which is lucky for our team as I know many people in the community which makes it easy for me to get in contact with them either over the phone or even face to face. its also handy that I know people of varying ages as this will suit our theme of "perspectives" of the young and the old. This makes my role simple, I will be the one asking these people questions and their opinions on a variety of topics regarding Carrigtwohill, and with their  I'll record them to be used in a podcast that we'll be making as a team. I will also be taking charge in the implementation stage, during which i will be publishing our collected contend and driving the conversation with the locals

Reflection on the talk with Brian O'Reilly - Cillian

Due to actually living in Carrigtwohill myself, I feel that I know what the area and its people are like, and how the village is run, it is due to this reason that I appreciated the honesty in which Brian answered the questions given to him, he didn't try and completely sugar coat things, such as the rapid changes the village has gone through in the last 20 years from a social point of view. however I feel that he did try and over  exaggerate the community spirit nowadays. he also discussed his work I the community council which was fairly interesting as it gave me a broader view into the running of the facilities and over all decision making behind Carrig's infrastructure as such. He also discussed the growing population of foreigners coming into the community, saying that they have been welcomed with open arms and that a large majority of them have engrained themselves into the community, however being from Carrig, I haven't witnessed to many of these newcomers joining in...

My first blog post - Cillian

Hi all apologies for not having any previous blog posts, unfortunately I was having some difficulties accessing our teams blog page, not helped by the times we're going through.

week four blog (Muireann)

how are you feeling about the project at this stage?  after our discussions in class we have a clearer vision of our idea and plan and who is in charge or what area. Our idea is about perspectives targeting the older and younger generation and seeing what the issues between them to see what is similar what is different and finding a middle ground by making a piece of media we are thinking of a podcast as people feel more comfortable speaking without a camera in front of them. sharing different perspectives. contrasting old and young and possibly new residents to longer-term residents what aspects most interest you?  I'm interested to see how people react in the end to other perspectives and views on the same topic and will it bring the generations closer together. I am also interested to just learn about people and understand community diversity in this community and learn and see how similar issues might arise in your own community and how to better understand another opinion...

What I took away from the Toolkit (Aidan)

Framed in human terms Broad enough to understand Narrow enough to make topic manageable What can we offer? What are the best ways to communicate offerings? Step 1 - List of criteria  Fit into a certain timeframe Does it need a geographical or tropical focus? Does it need to fit into a new existing initiative? Explore new opportunities Step 2 - Make a list of challenges we're facing With Leadership/Design Team Step 3 - Reframe Challenges from constituents point of view and broader context Step 4 - Vote or select top two/three challenges based on criteria Step 5 - Narrow to one challenge with input from key shareholders Step 6 - Write succinct one sentence Design Challenge to guide design team Create, Define, Adapt "What do you know?" What people need or want? What technologies can help in this challenge? What solutions or ideas were being tried in other areas? Any early hypotheses about how to solve the design challenge Any contradictions or tensions that could emerge? Whe...

Exploring themes and Ideas(1) (Muireann)

To help discuss themes and ideas we created a group chat on messenger with all the members of the group to keep each other updated and in the loop of new themes and ideas so that we can see if ideas are worth pursuing. Exploring the theme of diversity and culture having people discuss their stories on a platform Carrigtwohill is a unique community due to its diversity. we are exploring the platform of having a podcast where people talk about their experience and culture to unearth peoples stories and experiences in the community to draw them closer together. A blog would be made attached to the podcast where people can add stories anonymously and it is discussed on the podcast to spark discussions. The host from Carrigtwohill with guests from the community and people of multiple nationalities could zoom call in to have discussions about their experience. possibly cutting it together after and making a video to put on youtube  I found when talking to Jim that he loved that we wanted...

Reflection on Speaker Jim Barry (Muireann)

Notes recorded when talking to Jim Barry 1. Why did you join/create the Historical Society for Carrigtwohill?  Club society. really interested in old things wanted people to know the history of the small village and inform himself and others and try and learn from the past and to keep cultural traditions. joined 8 years ago.  2. What is your favourite piece of history or folklore on Carrigtwohill and why?  Jim liked gathering info from folklore and relating it to the present day. Barryscort Castle. especially likes the poet Daibhi O Bruadai who was from Carrigtwohill. 3. How has the growth of the village affected your day to day life?  hasn't affected him much can still get all the things he needs, facilities are better but not much has changed. the first thing to move in Youghal carpets. 4. Do you think the community struggled with this growth? If so how? foreigners fit in well and took on a lot of Irish culture such as GAA but feels as the years go on Irish culture...

Questions for speakers (Muireann)

People asking the questions Cillian, Jason and Muireann Questions for speakers Speaker1 There is Brian O Reilly, a member of the Carrigtwohill Community Council. How has the community changed over the past 20 years? What is unique about your community? Do conflicts exist between community groups? What diversities exist in the Carrigtwohill community? (language, ethnicity, religion, minority groups, ages, disabilities etc) and is the community generally accepting of these? How integrated is the community council with the other community groups? Do you have inclusion initiatives on the community council agenda? What inclusion challenges do you have? What are the biggest issues facing the community council in Carrigtwohill? Where and how do people connect socially? How can cultural differences enhance the community? What's it like to live in Carrigtwohill?   Speaker2 Ollie Sheehan and Jim Barry, members of the historical society and two long term Carrigtwohill residents who hav...

Reflection blog one (Muireann)

This week we focused on empathising with people living in Carrigtwohill we learnt in the PowerPoint and videos about Carrigtwohill to empathise we first observe the lives of people living there and their behaviours. Engaging with the people living there asking questions about the community. finally, we have to immerse in ourselves in their environment to try and grasp an idea of what it might be like to live in Carrigtwohill. My initial impression of the social dynamics is that it is quite diverse with approximately 40 different ethnicities due to the large number of people moving into the area with an 11.6% increase between 2011-2016 four times the national average. Some topics that came up was possible issues between the younger and older generation and how one might be more accepting to new communities arriving to the area. This is based on one perspective but we would like to unearth more from other perspectives of people in the community. I would also love to explore the idea of h...
Reflection on class 1/2/2021 During our class we watched a few videos showing the community of Carrigtwohill, the videos showed how the small town has had a big increase in it's population in the last few decades. What was shown showed the viewer that this town that was once mostly populated by people of irish descent is now growing into a diverse and open community. Many people from all over the world as shown in the video there were people of all sorts of ethnicities. What's great about what we all discussed is that we all agreed on how this change in the community was making the town a more friendly place to people, while perhaps the older generations might have a bit of a hesitance to invite people into their community most people wouldn't be hateful or dismissive but more so maybe wanting to keep their distance as most of the people they've known their entire lives are all from the same background as they are. Meeting people of different backgrounds can be a chall...

Reflection and Thoughts (Mairead)

In class this week we were introduced to the rural community of Carrigtwohill. We watched informative videos created by people from the area promoting the town of Carrigtwohill, and learned a lot about it's developments in the past decade or so. We began a problem solving process within our groups by attempting to empathise with the people of this area by looking inwards and sharing our own personal experiences with various communities throughout our lives. This helped us to begin thinking about what kind of topics we want to address with our final project, a socially engaging piece of digital media for the people of Carrigtwohill.  The social dynamics of Carrigtwohill seem similar to other rural towns found around Ireland- a profound population of people aged 50+, working families and children. One thing that stood out to me though was the recent influx of ethnicities from outside of Ireland into the area. After some discussion with my group members we decided we want to look furt...

What We Covered (Aidan) - 1/2/21

What We covered (Aidan) - 1/2/21 We watched through different informative videos describing the community of Carrigtwohill, how the different cultures and communities have merged or overlapped with one another to create this new kind of society. We discussed through mind maps what we thought we could use as a question to any of the people coming to talk about their certain community and talked with one of our colleagues who is a resident about their own personal feelings on the town. The Social dynamics to me come off as a new type of the old style, very community all together based where everyone would nearly know everything about their neighbour. They're industry seems to have improved over the last couple of years due to the obvious influx of different people from other countries. There seems to be a sort of acceptance by the older generation to this new one but I'm more or less left unsure by the videos, I would like to have discussions with people and get their honest opi...
